The need for a new port terminal

Port of Grenland (Grenland Havn) is one of Norway’s largest ports, handling vast amounts of cargo for both national and international industries every year. For many years, Brevik Terminal has been a key hub for the region’s maritime transport, efficiently managing large cargo volumes.

In recent years, container traffic has increased significantly, as more industrial companies choose to transport their goods by sea rather than by road. As a result, Brevik Terminal is now operating near full capacity. To ensure continued growth and sustainable transport, it is necessary to supplement it with a new terminal that can accommodate increasing volumes.

Several factors have influenced this decision:

  • Increased capacity needs: Growing cargo volumes and larger vessels require a modern terminal with deep-water quays and improved logistics flow.

  • Stricter environmental regulations: New national and international requirements call for infrastructure that supports greener transport solutions.

  • Industry demand: The region’s expanding industrial sector requires access to a port that can efficiently and reliably handle various types of cargo.

The green shift – moving goods by sea

Port Director Torben Jepsen explains:

– We are facing a future where both cargo volumes and sustainability requirements are increasing. With Frier Vest, we can provide a port terminal that meets these needs while giving the industry a crucial competitive advantage.

A key driver behind the development of Frier Vest Port Terminal is environmental sustainability. The new terminal will enable industries in the region to utilize sea transport as close to production sites as possible. This helps reduce unnecessary road transport and lower emissions.

Additionally, the terminal plays a crucial role in the region’s ambition to become the world’s first climate-positive industrial cluster. A key part of this goal is carbon capture and storage (CCS), which requires the transport of a new industrial product – one that must be shipped by sea.

Why Frier Vest?

The decision to establish a new port terminal at Frier Vest is a strategic one, based on thorough assessments of location, accessibility, and future potential. One key advantage is that port operations will be moved further away from densely populated areas while being positioned closer to the industrial hubs surrounding Frierfjorden.

  • Proximity to industry: Frier Vest is located at the heart of one of Norway’s most important industrial regions, ensuring shorter transport distances and lower emissions.

  • Ready-to-develop land: Large, pre-zoned sites allow for the rapid and cost-effective construction of a modern terminal, using locally sourced materials for land reclamation.

  • Connections to key infrastructure: Frier Vest offers easy access to the E18 highway and other major transport routes, strengthening the link between sea and land transport.

Hans Olav Storkås, CEO of Frier Vest Holding AS, emphasizes the significance of this strategic location:

– With modern infrastructure and the strategic placement of the port terminal, Frier Vest offers unique opportunities for industry and logistics.

The terminal’s role in the future

The new terminal will be a key component of Port of Grenland’s overall strategy to ensure the region’s competitiveness. The aim is to establish a flexible port that can handle increasing cargo volumes while enabling sustainable transport solutions.

With the potential for green energy bunkering, the terminal will also contribute to reducing emissions from maritime transport, giving the region’s industries better conditions for meeting future environmental requirements.

Port Director Jepsen concludes:

– Frier Vest is an important step in the development of Port of Grenland and the region’s industrial future. By investing in a new port terminal here, we ensure that businesses have access to modern, sustainable, and forward-thinking logistics facilities.
